Does the park service own the land? I know hurricanes and flooding destroyed the town essentially but with real estate and coastal property….why hasn’t a developer looked into it? I know there is some primitive camping sites but I was looking at a map of the Florida keys and they are a lot smaller in size and inhabited. The part of land closest to ocraco*ke island is pretty large…just asking. |

Land substrate. Portsmouth Island is just sand. Florida Keys are made of limestone. If you have never been to the Keys, you should visit. |

It’s a National Seashore. It won’t be developed. |

Portsmouth Island is part of Cape Lookout National Seashore, as is Shackleford Banks. But Portsmouth is actually part of the Core Banks. The Shackleford Banks are on the other side of Cape Lookout. |

Land substrate.. If I was in the keys I was a very small child. I know my dad liked the old Florida but not Miami for some reason I remember his favorite place in Florida was St Pete. All the trips were on those old movie reels. I took my daughter to siesta key and almost cried at the development. I think it was lido key where we use to go searching for shrimp and sand dollars. One was totally wild and my aunt Pat who lived in Sarasota said they were gong to build hotels there soon. Early 1970s. |

Go all the way south to the Keys, jfalba. It's the USA Caribbean. Seafood, tropical food, clear water and warm breezes. My grandparents and great grandparents lived on Florida's mainland. Beautiful, but not like the Keys. |

And if you haven't been to the Keys, do yourself a favor and take the 60 mile boat trip from Key West to the Dry Tortugas. It is fantastic place to visit. |

What months are best to visit the Florida keys? This may be a good idea for my daughter since we missed vacation (she changed jobs)? |

So, tell me what we did wrong?!?! We have lived in central Florida now for a little over 8 years. I had always wanted to visit the Keys. A few years ago we took a few days and made the trip down. (It is only about 6 hours or so drive from our home to Key West.) I was so disappointed. It looked nothing like I expected. I was shocked at how murky the water looked. The road along the islands looked junky, dilapidated and sad. Broken down cars and boats, abandoned looking businesses. I had promised my family that the journey there was worth the trip. None of us were impressed. Where did I go wrong? Now, Dry Tortugas! I dream of visiting there. It's on my bucket list for sure! |

I like the Keys during October. After that you get pretty steady north winds that make boating less than ideal. Of course, you still have to be aware of potential hurricanes. |

During the late 70s I used to go to the Dry Tortugas two or three times a year. Until it was automated in 1988, the lighthouse on Loggerhead Key had five Coasties permanently stationed there. So we would occasionally fly technicians there to do routine maintenance. It made for a really nice workday for us, because while they were doing their thing, we could do whatever we wanted. And the snorkeling was spectacular. |

Instead the Keys you should visit Bermuda |

I've rented the Last Resort in Islamorada five times since 2009. I became friends with the owners. After Covid, the price for rentals in the Keys soared but there is no better slice of paradise in the Keys than one of these two homes. If you can swing the cost, you won't be sorry! |

When I clicked the link, I thought...."That looks like the house from Bloodline." I had to think for a bit because that show was a LONG time ago on Netflix in the early binging days, but as it turns out, Islamadora was the setting for the show. For anyone who watched that, some fun behind the scenes... |

Agreed, ezbuckwheat. You ride 60 miles out in the ocean and out of nowhere up pops a 150 year old brick fort. It's an incredible place to snorkel. You can stand on the brick walkway around the fort and easily gaze ten feet down. it's like looking into a fancy aquarium. Many folks spend the night out there. Stargazing must be incredible. |

I’ve seen the fort from the air, flown close around it low and slow, but I never landed or set foot there. It is indeed a fascinating place though. With 16 million bricks just imagine the construction logistics during that period of time. Click to follow link...:~:text=As%20you%20tour%20the%20fort,war%20and%20come%20from%20Maine.
